Center for the Improvement of Teaching & Outreach
Explore the many possibilities we have to offer!
The center was founded upon principles provided by our mentor Dr. M. David Merrill, scholar extraordinaire, who states that; "effective, efficient and appealing instruction involves much more than merely providing information and checking it with a few rote memory multiple choice questions in the testing center. We endeavor to provide opportunities that emphasize learning in real world contexts by solving real world problems and doing real world tasks."
It is also worthy to note that we as professionals, educators, staff and administrators must understand that "Learning is an individual affair. We may learn in groups, with groups, about groups, and even for groups. But we learn as individuals. It happens inside the skin of people, one at a time." Peter Smith; The Quiet Crisis (2004).
The Center for the Improvement of Teaching & Outreach - CITO is comprised of two departments. Our Outreach department (formerly known as Continuing Education) oversees a variety of conferences, workshops, programs, and facilities. Our Improvement of Teaching group is a team of individuals with various specialties to develop sound instruction and support the faculty and staff of BYU-Hawaii.
